Advisers use PD workshop to collaborate on CTE competencies

Advisers from around the state gathered in three different locations to collaborate on the new KSDE CTE competencies as part of the KSPA PD workshop. A total of 38 advisers attended events at K-State’s A.Q Miller School of Media and Communication Feb. 20, the Elliott School of Journalism at Wichita State University Feb. 21 and at the USD232 Cedar Trails Exploration Center Feb. 24 to share resources, work together on lesson plans and bond with their fellow journalism peers.

Halstead adviser and KSPA board member Kelli Zehr, who attended the workshop at WSU, said she appreciated the chance to get to know advisers from across the state during the workshop.

“It was a laidback day with a comfortable atmosphere for the advisers. The best part of the event was the opportunity to connect with advisers, share experiences and figure out what other advisers are doing to meet the CTE standards and what is needed to meet those standards,” Zehr said.

Lawrence Free State adviser Jared Shuff attended the workshop at KSU and said he appreciated learning from more experienced advisers.

“I felt the workshop was very helpful in terms of organizing curriculum for our intro classes. Personally it validated the work I’ve been doing in my classroom especially since coming on mid-semester in 2023 and hitting the ground running. We came up with a lot of great information and swapped some great materials for our classes,” Shuff said.

As a first-year adviser at Humboldt High School, Hailey Phillips said the workshop was particularly helpful in her planning for next year. Phillips attended the workshop at CTEC.

“The KSPA professional development event was definitely an enriching experience for me, especially as a first-year journalism teacher. It was a pleasure to get to know all the amazing journalism instructors and advisers across the state. Being able to share resources, lesson plans and content was incredibly valuable as well. I have a better understanding of how to plan for my courses in the upcoming 25-26 academic year. I certainly look forward to attending future KSPA professional development events,” Phillips said.
