The KSPA CTE committee has released the first in a series of information designed to help advisers navigate the new CTE pathway and course revisions for journalism-related courses. The documents outline changes to course names and competencies in the former Digital Media, Graphic Design and Web and Digital Communications pathways, now called the Media Design and Communications Pathway.
The documents also include the necessary course codes for districts to use to receive funding for those courses. Advisers should make their districts aware of the new changes so that they can prepare in advance of the 2025-2026 school year.
CTE committee member and Olathe East adviser Lindsey Skaggs stressed the importance of helping KSPA members navigate the numerous changes to courses and course content.
“Kansas has a rich history of scholastic journalism excellence. However, many of our members are the only people in their building, and in some cases their districts who teach this content,” Skaggs said. “Ensuring our schools continue to be aligned with CTE competencies will allow us to continue our mission of supporting students now and in their future careers.”
As part of their goal of helping advisers navigate the CTE changes, the board is also organizing a series of in-person professional development opportunities throughout the month of February. These events, at a variety of locations around the state, will give advisers the chance to review the competencies and plan and share curriculum in advance of the 2025-2026 school year. More information on this PD opportunity will be coming soon, but confirmed dates and locations are: Feb. 19 in Lawrence, Feb. 21 in Wichita, Feb. 24 in De Soto, Feb. 26 in Hays. The board is working to secure more locations soon.
