Advisers:
I am so inspired and excited! At a moment when the world is on lockdown, the KSPA State Contest GREW this year! What an amazing tribute to your energy — and your students’ energy — for journalism, even at this challenging time! This year’s contest has 1,283 entries. Wow!
This post will focus on the process for the upcoming contests. Please read this carefully as many details from a “normal” State Contest are different this year.
Previous On-Site Contests
Where are the prompts for the “previously on-site” categories?
Prompts will be posted at 3 p.m. April 17 on this page (https://www.kspaonline.org/ state/2020-state-contest/). Right now, advisers and contestants can review the instructions for each contest.
How will students submit entries for the “previously on-site” categories?
All submission of student writing and copyediting (categories A, B, D, E, F, G, H, J, Z) will occur through an online form. No password is necessary. Students will upload plain text. No file will be uploaded. This allows all students to compete, regardless of software. This process does not apply to the Editorial Cartoon category.
How will Editorial Cartoon entries be submitted?
Students in Editorial Cartoon must submit through BetterBNC. Advisers will receive passwords to their state BetterBNC account via email later today. All Editorial Cartoon entries should be submitted as jpgs. The Editorial Cartoon page has best practices for submitting in this way.
What has changed about the writing categories?
All writing entries will be made through an online form. The form does not require a password. The adviser cannot review entries for these categories.
Text submitted through the online form will not allow for text formatting. Text should not contain italics, bold or underlined text. Also, students should note paragraph breaks with this symbol: // These instructions have been included for the prompt for each category. We will also notify judges of these limitations and symbols.
When are the “previously on-site” categories due?
All entries must be submitted by April 18 at 11 p.m.
Digital Submission Contests
How will students submit entries for the digital submission categories?
All categories that were judged as part of the Regional Contests have been advanced to the State Contest, assuming that the school registered for State. There is no need to take any action in the following categories: J, K, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, U and V. Please do not edit these entries in your BetterBNC account.
How will students submit to the STATE ONLY digital submission categories?
Submission for categories W, X and Y (Multimedia Storytelling, Online Photo Gallery and Social Media) will be made through BetterBNC. Advisers will receive passwords to their state BetterBNC account via email later today. The prompts for these contests are posted on this page (https://www.kspaonline.org/ state/2020-state-contest/).
When are the “previously on-site” categories due?
All entries must be submitted by April 18 at 11 p.m.
We have lots of other news to communicate later about the KSPA Awards ceremony, paying for invoices and receiving feedback. In this post, we simply hoped to provide information about the contest that begins tomorrow.
Thanks again for leading your students to compete in KSPA State! Wow — a thousand times — Wow!
All the best,
Eric Thomas
KSPA executive director
