Join us at our annual workshop on Saturday, April 6. It will be held at Derby North Middle School, 3100 N Rock Road, Derby, Kansas 67037. The workshops are from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. We’ll have donuts and juice available at 9:00 a.m. with a short introduction.
Our goal is to provide something for everyone. Bring your new first-year and returning staff members. Bring students planning to take Journalism in high school.
Workshop Topics in the Works:
- Just what is KSPA and what can it do for you? KSPA Contests available for middle-level programs.
- Photo basics and how to improve.
- Establish yourself and your publication on various social media sites,
- Theme development for yearbook. (This one is great for new advisers and next year’s new staff.)
- Design basics and coverage
- Marketing ideas: How to sell your yearbook.
- Presenters:
Joanna Chadwick spent 20 years as a sportswriter at The Wichita Eagle covering more than 80 high schools. She established VarsityKansas.com and worked to brand the website through social media, specifically Twitter. Chadwick, who is in her third year as the Derby High journalism adviser, continues to cover high school sports in Vype magazine. - Linda Drake is an awarding-winning adviser and National Yearbook Adviser of the Year. Her publications have won state and national awards. She mentors schools and is a frequent speaker at workshops and conventions.
- Travis Feil advised the All-Kansas and All-American yearbook at Sterling (Kan.) H.S. prior to joining Jostens in 2012. He served on the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Executive Board as an Area Representative, the First Amendment Response Committee Chairman, the Regional and State Contest Committee Chairman and President-Elect. With Jostens, Feil serves as lead instructor in the training and development department, represents the Midwest on the corporate council and has received numerous achievement awards. He frequently instructs at local, state, regional and national workshops and serves schools daily in the Wichita and Kansas City metro areas.
- KSPA Middle-Level Liaison Laura Hayden and her yearbook staff have received All-Kansas in for their 2017 and 2018 yearbooks as well as Superior in the Middle School Book Critique.
COST: Here is the best part. The workshop is free. Come with or without students.
