Three Kansas student websites earn Pacemaker finalist distinction

Student news websites from Lawrence Free State, Mill Valley and Shawnee Mission East were named Pacemaker finalists Tuesday by the National Scholastic Press Association.

NSPA Online Pacemaker contest judges waded through 252 student news websites from across the country and winnowed that list down to 50 finalists, three from Kansas.

Pacemakers are considered the most prestigious award given by the NSPA, and are often referred to as the “high school Pulitzers.” The NSPA will announce the winners at its annual convention April 27 in San Francisco.

Here are Kansas’ winners:

The Harbinger Online, Shawnee Mission East; Duncan MacLachlan, editor; C. Dow Tate, adviser.

The Free Press, Lawrence Free State; Sam Boatright, editor; Laurie Folsom, adviser.

Mill Valley News Online, Mill Valley; Miranda Snyder and Alec Santaularia, editors; Kathy Habiger, adviser.
