KSPA Professional Development Event 2025
The Kansas Scholastic Press Association is offering a special professional development day for educators to prepare for upcoming changes to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway impacting journalism and media classes in Kansas. This event replaces the traditional winter workshops and will equip teachers with essential resources and strategies.

- Feb. 19 (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) – Ulysses High School or board office
- Feb. 20 (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) – Kansas State University
- Feb. 21 (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) – Wichita State University
- Feb. 24 (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) – De Soto Career & Technical Education Center
- Feb. 26 (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) – Fort Hays State University

9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Welcome and Overview
- Coffee, light refreshments, and networking
- Review of the day’s objectives and schedule
- Brief introduction to the new state standards
9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. Understanding the New State Standards
- Presentation on the key elements of the updated standards
- Group discussion:
- What are the major changes?
- How do they align with current journalism practices and trends?
- Q&A session
10:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Break
10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Brainstorming Curriculum Frameworks
- Break into small groups to brainstorm ideas for the new curriculum:
- Identifying essential journalism skills
- Integrating multimedia and digital journalism
- Emphasizing ethics and responsibility in reporting
- Group presentations of initial ideas
12 p.m. – 1: p.m. Lunch Break
1 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. Building Lesson Plans and Assessments
- Hands-on workshop:
- Drafting specific lesson plans for core topics
- Designing assessments that align with the standards
- Exploring project-based learning opportunities
- Peer review and feedback on lesson plan drafts
2:15 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Break
2:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Resource Sharing and Collaboration
- Explore available resources (e.g., articles, multimedia tools, case studies)
- Discuss potential guest speakers, field trips, and partnerships with local media
- Identify opportunities for cross-curricular integration
3:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Closing and Next Steps
- Recap of the day’s work
- Outline follow-up tasks and deadlines
- Gather feedback on the session
What will attendees receive?
Attendees will receive a certificate of completion for their PD points. Attendees will help create and will be given access to a shared Google folder with resources they can use to help plan for implementing the new standards in 2025-2026.
