Four Kansas news publications are Pacemaker finalists

News publications from Hays High School, Blue Valley High School, Shawnee Mission East and Kapaun Mount Carmel all earned Pacemaker finalist distinction Friday from the National Scholastic Press Association.

The Pacemakers are considered the “Pulitzers” of scholastic journalism in the U.S., and only 54 high school newspapers and news magazines earned that recognition this year.

The school, category, publication, student editor and adviser:

  • Hays High School, newspapers 16 pages or fewer, The Guidon, Thayne Griffin and Bill Gasper;
  • Shawnee Mission East, newspapers 17 pages or more, The Harbinger, Stephen Nichols and C. Dow Tate;
  • Blue Valley High School, newspapers 17 pages or more, Tiger Print, Mitchell Smith and Jill Chittum;
  • Kapaun Mount Carmel, news magazines, The Paladin, Max Martin and Rachel King (co-editors), and Ashley Perkins.

NSPA will announce winners on Nov. 14 at the annual convention in Washington, D.C.
